The History of Litvínov

The ruling aristocratic families changed often ever since. In times of of George of Poděbrady fell the area under the rule of Czech kings again was not part of Saxony anymore. German influence has been still a big issue in the region. It started with opening of iron ore mines on the both sides of Ore Mountains and with arrival of miners and prospectors not only from Behemia, but from Saxony as well. In 1642 the supremacy over the area was given to the house of Wallenstein who ruled until 1918 Ve střední části Rooseveltovy ulice byla počátkem 20. století postavena pro I. Snímek z doby kolem roku 1918.when new republic of Czechoslovakia emerged after the end of World War I. In 1715 a manufacture for cloth was estabilished in Upper Litvínov. Through the time the manufacture specialized in production of stockings which were delivered not only to emperor’s court in Vienna, but to other significant cities in Europe ( Petersburg ). In 1715 was Litvínov considered as a small town, in 1852 by economic developement as a town with all rights.

Present times

Nowadays, most of the industry is concentrated to chemical plants which were built between towns of Most and Litvínov through the German occupation during the World War II.

Náměstí Míru The specialization of the plant was a production of fuel from brown coal because of its bearings in this area. Chemical plant still produces although the its directivity to other kinds of industry. Huge bearings of brown coal are scattered in all of the region. The coal mines gave work to many people for decades. Most of the open-cast mines are depleted, some are beeing flooded and formes lakes ( Matylda, Most Lake ) which is the top of recultivation efforts in the region. We can not forget to mention the moving of the late gothic church by 841 meters in thirty days in result of demolition of the city of Most. Even nowadays citizens of Litvínov have to fight for not breaking mining limits.

Kostel sv. Michaela archandělaUnlike city of Most which was rebuilt in 70′s Litvínov is a town with rich architecture. Significant building is early baroque church of Arcangel Michael from 17th century. The museum is situated in Wallenstein’s castle, building from the year of 1732. Exhibition is focused on the history of Litvínov and natural assets of the region.

Litvínov is also well known for its famous natives not only from cultural scene ( Martin Maxa, Iva Frühlingova or Eva Herzigova ) but from the world of sports as well. The ice-hockey players are the most favourite. Names like Ivan Hlinka, Vladimir Ruzicka, Jiri Slegr or Robert Reichel is known almost to everyone. Ice-hockey is major sport in Litvinov since 50′s and the town of 27.000 inhabitants is litteraly living by it. The A team has never desceneded from the major league and its well known as talent incubator. Litvínov can pride itself by having 22 players who played NHL ( the most in Czech Republic ). Jiri Slegr is one the few memebers of the Triple Gold Club ( being wolrd champion, triumph at Olympic games and the Stanley Cup winner ).
